Biography

“Perhaps travel cannot prevent bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, worry, and die, it can introduce the idea that if we try and understand each other, we may even become friends.” – Maya Angelou

I was born close to Manchester, UK, to Scottish parents.  As a kid, my family moved a lot and lived in a number of locations in the British Isles.   My international travelling began inauspiciously with family vacations to the Costa del Sol, in Southern Spain.  Along with countless other Brits, I soaked up the Spanish sun in a region known for some of the worst elements of mass, commercial tourism!

My parents moved to Atlanta, GA in 1980, and I graduated from Leicester University (in UK) in 1987 with a BA in French, German and Italian.  I also speak Spanish, so that makes me a polyglot (sounds shady, but look it up).  From there, I travelled almost continuously for the next five years. Backpacking through India and Nepal, contributing to a guidebook in Morocco, teaching English in Taiwan, and working on a commercial fishing boat in Alaska.  In 1991 I joined Lost World Adventures and took over ownership in 1996.

My greatest satisfaction comes from the large network of personal friends and professional colleagues through the travel industry – both here in Unites States and throughout Central and South America.  My personal experience in all areas we offer gives me a unique ability to consult with our clients and develop unique travel experiences.  It is what I love to do, and what gets me out of bed in the morning!

In 1994 I married a dear friend, Beth, and we have one son, Matthew, who from the age of 6 months, has been travelling with his parents (sometimes reluctantly!) to over 30 countries and 6 continents.  When not working, I enjoy road and mountain biking, hiking, backpacking and camping.
