Located in the flat grasslands of the Pantanal and on the banks of the Mutum River, lies the Pousada Rio Mutum Lodge, a simply beautiful pousada.

Lunches are served family-style and an orientation is given by a naturalist guide, outlining the program of activities available and offer a brief description of the ecology of this fabulous nature reserve.

The Pantanal is a diverse landscape of savannah lowlands, seasonally flooded wetlands (rainy season is from November through March) and rich forested areas. The Pantanal's annual flood/drought cycle causes constant variations in habitat, wildlife and transportation methods.

The area around Pousada Rio Mutum is home to abundant wildlife, including caiman, anaconda, ant-eater, capivara and deer. Among the hundreds of species of birds, keep your eyes peeled for hyacinth macaw, and many species of duck, stork and heron.

The following is a sample 5-day Pousada do Rio Mutum program:

Day 1

Cuiaba Airport reception. Transfer by car to the Pousada do Rio Mutum (travel time - approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes*) passing through the small town of Santo Antonio do Leverger, as well as the villages of Porto de Fora and Mimoso. On the way to the lodge it will be possible to spot birds, various wild animals, enjoying the landscape with the typical settlements of the Pantanal people.

*During the rainy season (December to April) the transfer may be 2 hours by car, plus 30 minutes by boat, from the Rio Mutum Bridge to the lodge.

Upon arrival at the lodge, reception and welcome drink. After check-in an introduction to the Pantanal region is scheduled with a presentation of cartographic maps and satellite images. After the lecture there is a possibility of a short walk to observe the various species of birds and other animals at the lodge. Dinner and overnight at Mutum Lodge.

All meals are included from lunch today to breakfast on the last day. All guided excursions are included during your stay.

Day 2

After breakfast, an ecological walk, approximately 3 hours, to explore the nature, passing through wooded areas, forests and open fields in search of birds, mammals, reptiles, plants and other components of the Pantanal ecosystem. Return to the lodge for lunch.

This afternoon there will be a boat ride along the Mutum River (approximately 3 hours). During this trip over the transparent waters and through winding riverways, one can observe giant otters (Pteronura brasiliensis), rays (lymma Taeniura) and shoals of small fish. And on its banks, several species of birds whose natural vegetation habitat. Return to the lodge.

After dinner, night spotlighting by jeep or boat, approximately 2 hours, exploring the surroundings in search of nocturnal creatures and contemplation of the wetland environment.

Day 3

After breakfast a boat ride of about 3 hours visiting a fishing village by the name of Cuiabá Mirim. This village on the banks of Rio Cuiaba is lovely in particular because of the simplicity and spontaneity of its inhabitants, which are living from fishing and small subsistence agriculture. Return to the lodge for lunch.

This afternoon a land safari by jeep to a village named Capoeirinha, about 15 km from the lodge. This is an activity of approximately 3 hours. During the tour we will search for one of the most threatened species of birds: the hyacinth macaw (Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus). Late afternoon return to the Pousada on the way spotting various mammals and other animals. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4

After breakfast horseback riding, about 3 hours, up a to typical farm on the border of Siá Mariana Bay. This path is excellent for observing the local flora and fauna throughout the year, you will be surprised by the diversity of species. Lunch at the lodge.

This afternoon there will be a boat ride, about 3 hours, down the Mutum River up the Siá Mariana Bay (an 8 km extension). During this tour we will explore the banks of the bay and the channel connecting both bays - the Siá Mariana and Chacororé. Many different species of birds, reptiles and other animals (during the rainy season the Chacororé bay exceeds 15 km in length) can be observed. Stop for sunset and piranha fishing*. On the way back to the lodge a night spotlighting activity in search for animals. Dinner and overnight at the lodge.

*The piranha fishing occurs February through September. During the period from October 1st to January 31st, it is prohibited to fish in rivers, lakes and bays in Mato Grosso, because it is the breeding season of fishes (Piracema).

Day 5

4:30am – sunrise tour. Paddling in canoes about 1 hour and 30 minutes you can appreciate the dazzling spectacle of the awakening of nature in the Pantanal. Return to the lodge for breakfast followed by checkout and transfer to Cuiabá airport.
