A thousand years of culture will come to light on our tour across the Imperial Cities of Morocco. You'll hear the spirit of the country from the rhythmic sounds of Marrakech to the calming calls to prayer in the ancient mosques of Fez. You'll explore the foothills of the Atlas Mountains and immerse yourself in the labyrinths of ancient medinas. Uncover the heritage of Morocco on this tour that will take you from wonder to wonder and into the luxuries of historic structures.
On the first day of the Imperial Cities of Morocco tour, arrive in Fes and enjoy a welcome luxury spa and hammam treatment before a wonderful gourmet Moroccan dinner at your Riad.
On the second day, see the sights of Morocco’s cultural capital. Spend the morning touring the Royal Palace, the medersa, and strolling through the old Jewish Quarter. After lunch, learn about Moroccan traditional crafts by visiting the city’s tanneries, the epicenter of Moroccan leather goods, and the artisan quarters. After this introduction into traditional Moroccan arts and crafts, spend the remainder of the afternoon exploring the souk.
Spend the third day on an excursion to Volubilis and Meknes. After breakfast, drive to the Roman ruins at Volubilis. History buffs will love visiting this city, a UNESCO Heritage Site, which is commonly considered to have been the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Mauretania. After exploring Volubilis, travel to the nearby Meknes, another of Morocco’s Imperial Cities. Have lunch in the Meknes medina before visiting the centuries-old medieval doors giving fame to the modern Meknes. Return to Fes, and have dinner and a relaxing evening, or walk to souk for the Fes Tasting Tour. The Tasting Tour consists of a local culinary expert guiding the group through the souk to sample some of Morocco’s favorite tasty treats.
On the fourth day, visit your third Imperial City, and the current capital: Rabat. Arrive in the late morning, and have a lunch overlooking the city before seeing the sites. First, take a stroll around the Chellah, the medieval fortified Muslim necropolis. What is so interesting about this particular site is the presence of the Phoenician, Roman, and Muslim historical ruins all present on the same compound, built one on top of the previous. After Chellah, visit the Yacoub al-Mansour esplanade, which contains both the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, an architectural masterpiece, and the Hassan Tower. Spend the remainder of your day exploring the Kasbah Oudayas, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, enjoying the winding alleyways, the view of the BouRegreg River, and relax with a cup of Moroccan Mint Tea at the Cafe Maure. Have a relaxing dinner at your riad.
After breakfast, set out for the hustling, bustling city of Marrakech. Settle into your riad, then visit the beautiful Majorelle Gardens and long time home of Yves Saint-Laurent. Take a leisurely stroll, and learn a little more about the culture of Morocco by visiting the Islamic Art Museum nestled in the gardens. In the evening, spend a few hours in the Royal Hammam if you wish, then have dinner overlooking the medina.
The second day in Marrakech will be spent visiting the highlights. In the morning, see the Koutoubia Mosque, explore the Bahia Palace, and visit the Saadian Tombs. After lunch, visit the beautiful and historical Ben Youssef Madrassa, an Islamic college, and the largest in all of Morocco. From the madrassa, walk into Marrakech’s souk. After a brief introduction, spend the afternoon shopping or exploring the winding streets of the medina. I the evening, visit the famous Djemaa el Fna square, to see the culmination of colorful chaos, musical performances, snake charmers, and henna artists.
Wake up early on your last day in Marrakech in order to catch the sunrise while on a hot air balloon excursion over southern Morocco. After a simple breakfast, return to Marrakech and either rest up at your hotel or explore the medina before an afternoon Moroccan cooking class! Learn from a local chef de cuisine the secrets of how to make a delicious traditional meal, complete with fresh bread, salads, mint tea and tagines, and finished with signature Moroccan cookies. For dinner, enjoy the fruits of your cooking-class labor.
Say goodbye to the ochre city and make your way towards the coastal gem of Essaouira. On your way, stop for a gourmet lunch and wine tasting at a local vineyard. After lunch, continue on to Essaouira, and have a brief introduction to the sqala, medina, and harbor, then spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the town at your leisure. Enjoy a wonderful seafood dinner at Chalet de la Plage.
In the morning, head out for a visit to an Argan Oil Cooperative located just outside of the city. Upon returning, have some lunch then free time in town. For the adventurous of the group, check out the surf report or have a lovely sunset horseback ride down the beach, then bask in the salty air during a rooftop dinner overlooking the town.
Rise and shine and make your way into the mountains. After a short drive, find yourself in the Atlas Mountain Range, and embark on a lovely hike- which can be adjusted for any desired length or level of difficulty. Find yourself in a local Berber home for lunch, and explore some of the surrounding villages. Post-exploration, make your way to your hotel. Spend your last evening enjoying the incredible Kasbah Tamadot.
