While enjoying the wilderness of Darién all around us, camp in comfort in custom-designed African safari-style tents with all the amenities we offer at our other ecolodges.
A walk with your knowledgeable guide will be thoroughly awe-inspiring and entertaining. From tiny, colorful poison dart frogs on the forest floor to Red-throated Caracaras in the canopy above, these forests are full of life. At the end of the day of exploring the region, settle into your tent and doze off to the calls of owls, potoos, nightjars and a symphony of frogs, bidding you good-night from the forests of Darién.
At Canopy Camp Darien, most of the birding is done at ground level. The camp itself is situated on a small plateau in this section of lowland rainforest, sculpted by slow-moving streams in the forest below. To get you up off the ground for better views, each tent is constructed on its own observation deck to provide an opportunity to get our eyes and scopes a little higher.
Each and every observation deck offers beautiful views of the surrounding forest, just as you step outside of your tent. From here, we can set up our scopes and enjoy our morning coffee and some of the best bird watching in Panama, or enjoy a cool drink in the afternoon among picturesque views of the forests of Darién.
Barred Puffbirds, Rufous-tailed Jacamars, White-headed Wrens and many more make up a distinct dawn chorus like no other in Panama. Located in Central America’s most diverse and least-explored region, the Darién province of Panama is a birder’s paradise.
The province of Darién is revered for its incredible wildlife and blessed to have an immense expanse of protected rainforest in Darién National Park. It is one of the least visited and most valued areas for birding and wildlife watching in Central America.
It is literally the end of the highway in Panama – the Pan-American Highway, which extends from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, with only one small gap between Panama and Colombia – the Darien Gap. The protected Darién jungle provides a stronghold for the Great Green Macaw, Great Curassow and the majestic Harpy Eagle, Panama’s national bird, as well as other endangered wildlife including Colombian Spider Monkey, Baird’s Tapir and America’s most powerful cat, the Jaguar.
The Canopy Camp has eight African Safari-style tents – the perfect accommodation for sleeping in the jungle! Each tent is raised on its own sturdy platform above the ground, and has a private bathroom just a few steps away from the tent entrance. The tents are well-spaced and lush tropical plants and ensure privacy.

Deluxe Suite Tent
Our large, two-room deluxe tents offer a bit more space. Each has an area of 249 square feet, including an extra room for a small bed or extra gear. Canopy Camp Darien is located in the most remote province of Panama, and is a birder’s paradise; however, this doesn’t mean there is nothing to do if you are not too keen on birding. The surrounding forests are teeming with a large diversity of mammals, frogs, insects and plants, and other unique Panama attractions, providing endless opportunities for exploration and enjoyment.
