Chapada is like an oasis in the wilderness.

Located in the heart of Bahia, Brazil - Chapada Diamantina has flat-topped mountains, canyons, valleys, trails, caves and the most impressive Brazilian waterfalls.

The Pati Valley is almost 900 meters deep and was once a coffee plantation, now home for around 30 families that open their house for hiking and nature lovers.

Our Around Chapada Diamantina program is a great option to explore the National Park, from the north to the south of Chapada Diamantina. Visitors sleep in various small villages and have contact with local people. Some highlights are included as Pai Inácio Hill and Buracão Waterfall.

Day 1: Salvador - Lençóis - Pai Inácio

You will be met at your Salvador hotel by your guide. Transfer to the bus station. Bus to Lençóis (408 km). Arrive Lençóis. After lunch (not included) visit “Morro do Pai Inácio” (1240m). Transfer by car from Lençóis (25 min), hike to the top (15 min). After sunset return to Lençóis. Overnight in Lençóis.

Morro do Pai Inácio (Father Ignacio’s Hill) – one of the highlights at Chapada Diamantina from where it is possible to have some of the most spectacular views of the region with series of flat topped mountains that are so characteristic for this landscape. It is very windy up there, but nevertheless there are plants and flowers.

Day 2: Lençóis - Grottos - Capão Valley

Transfer by car to Poço do Diabo (22 km – 20 min – 25 min walking). Afterwards transfer to Pratinha (27 km on paved road and 13 km on dirt road – 1 hour). Lunch at Pratinha. Then transfer to Torrinha (8 km – 15 min - 2 hours walking thru the cave). Transfer to Capão Valley (62 km - 40 min). Overnight in the valley.

Poço do Diabo – It is dark and gives a weird sensation, with an almost complete lack of visibility. Nevertheless, the acids that give this color are not pollutants.

Optional (locally paid) – There is an option to practice abseiling and flying fox. 

Pratinha – A bathing spa that is a real oasis in such an arid area. The bottom of the lake has countless micro-conchs, showing that there was a sea in this region in the past. Pratinha's River formed many grottos in the limestone.

Optional (locally paid) – There is an option to practice snorkeling. 

Gruta da Torrinha – It’s the most beautiful grotto at Chapada Diamantina, full of stalactites, stalagmites and other speleothems.

Day 3: Capão - Guine - Igatu

Full day walk from Capão Valley to Guiné (20km – 7 hours). Boxed-lunch provided on the way. At the end, transfer to Igatu (36 km on dirt road and 21km on paved road – 1h30). Dinner (included). Overnight in Igatu.

Trail Capão to Guiné – Probably the most beautiful day walk at Chapada Diamantina National Park. Most of the trip leads through the beautiful altitude fields “Gerais do Vieira” and “Gerais do Rio Preto” from where there is a great view of Pati Valley, which is considered one of the most beautiful Valleys in Brazil. 

Day 4: Igatu - Buracão Waterfall 

After breakfast, transfer to Ibicoara, south of the National Park of Chapada Diamantina (100 km on paved road and 28 km on dirt road / approximately 2 1/2 hours). Walking to Cachoeira do Buracão (6km round-trip). Box-lunch included. Then continue to Xique-Xique de Igatu, a small village - the Brazilian “Machu Picchu” (120 km on paved road and 28 km on dirt road / approximately 2 hours). Overnight at Pousada Pedras de Igatu, dinner and breakfast included. 

Buracão Waterfall - a truly amazing waterfall. More than 100 meters high and inside an impressive canyon, the “Cachoeira do Buracão” (Big Hole Waterfall). It will take your breath away.

Day 5: Igatu - Poço Encantado - Poço Azul - Lençóis

Depart the pousada on foot (5 km – 1 1/2 hours – easy level). At the end of the trail transfer to the entrance of Poço Encantado by car (41 km by paved road and 6 km by dirt road).

Then transfer to Poço Azul (21 km – 4 km on paved road and 17 km on dirt road / approximately 1 1/2 hours). Visit the cave and snorkel in its pool. Lunch at a local restaurant. Transfer back to Lençóis (63 km on paved road and 17 km on dirt road). Overnight at Lençóis hotel, breakfast included.

Poço Encantado - A cave filled with stunningly beautiful blue water. A steep entrance ramp leads to the cave, which will be lightened between April and August by the sunlight falling through a kind of natural window. Diving is not allowed.

Poço Azul – A crystal water lake in a cave, nicknamed the Enchanted Pool, it’s smaller and has a wooden platform for an easy access to the pool. The lighting changes according to the sun’s position. You can float for 20-30 minutes in the blue pool.

Day 6: Lençóis - Salvador

Free morning. Regular bus to Salvador. Transfer to the hotel or airport.
