A free morning to get to know the capital. This afternoon you drive to the historically important Thingvellir National Park, which is the site of Iceland‘s original parliament, established in 930.
Enjoy views across the clear waters of Lake Thingvallavatn. Visit the famous Gullfoss Waterfall, the powerful geothermal area famous for its spouting geyser Strokkur, and other hot springs.
At the foot of the Hekla Volcano, it is worth taking a trip to the valley of the river Thjorsa. On the route to Vik, the southernmost town in Iceland, you can stop to see the waterfalls Seljalandsfoss and Skogarfoss.
Right next to the Ring Road is Skaftafell National Park with the Svartifoss Waterfall surrounded by basalt columns. Europe‘s biggest glacier Vatnajokull and the impressive glacier lagoon Jokulsarlon are, without doubt, the highlights of the day. From the fishing village Höfn you drive to the Eastern Fjords, belonging geologically to the oldest parts of Iceland.
A visit to Petra‘s "rock garden" is not to be missed. From Egilsstadir you drive through the uninhabited and desert-like areas of the Modrudalsoraefi.
Explore the area around Myvatn, an active volcanic zone with pseudo craters, sulfuric springs and bizarre lava formations as well as lush green fertile plains. This area is also home to a large variety of bird life.
Visit Godafoss, the impressive "Waterfall of the Gods" en route to Akureyri, the largest town in the north. Take a trip to the fishing village Husavik where you can join a whale-watching excursion in a wooden boat. Overnight stay is in Skagafjord, an area well known for the breeding of Icelandic horses.
Close to Saudakrokur lies the fascinating folk museum at Glaumbaer. Continue west to the Borgarfjord district with its lava waterfalls and hot water springs. Return to Reykjavik where the tour ends.
You may organize the day as you wish, depending on your return flight. Return your rental car to the airport in Keflavik. Check in for your flight and return home.
