The dramatic Chilean landscape is literally alive. Geysers burst from the earth in the north, 50 of the country's 2000 volcanoes are still erupting, and as the sun goes down over the Salt Mountain range, you can hear the white-crusted rock formations cracking as they contract. This is a wild country of never-ending horizons, the world's driest desert, snow-capped mountains, and folk tradition.

Despite dark periods of military dictatorship under Pinochet, Chileans are warm, friendly, and open to visitors; descended from the Spanish, they are also known for their looks. Traditions include playing panpipes and bamboo flutes known as quenas, and, aside from football, the national sport is the controversial Chilean Rodeo.

Peru, officially the Republic of Peru, is bordered on the north by Ecuador and Colombia, on the east by Brazil, on the southeast by Bolivia, on the south by Chile, and on the west by the Pacific Ocean.

Peruvian territory was home to the Norte Chico civilization, one of the oldest in the world, and to the Inca Empire, the largest state in Pre-Columbian America. The Spanish Empire conquered the region in the 16th century and established a Viceroyalty, which included most of its South American colonies. After achieving independence in 1821, Peru has undergone periods of political unrest and fiscal crisis as well as periods of stability and economic upswing.

Straddling the equator on the Pacific coast wedged between Colombia and Peru, the smallest of the Andean nations covers an area no bigger than 284,000 square kilometres. But for all its diminutive size, the country is packed with the most startling contrasts of scenery and a diversity of culture and history that every visitor will find dazzling.

Encompassing tropical islands, towering snow capped peaks, cloud forests, sandy beaches, and simmering jungle, those lucky enough to explore this South American backwater are treated to a variety of unique landscapes and activities that leave many saying Ecuador manages to capture an entire continent in one country.

Costa Rica extends from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea over a distance of barely 200 miles. The total land mass occupies only 20 thousand square miles.
From wet, dry, tropical, and temperate forests to volcanoes, beaches, high mountains, and marshy lowlands, Costa Rica is home to bewilderingly diverse landscapes, flora, and fauna.

Costa Rica is one of the world's most popular destinations for eco-tourists because of its biodiversity. It has been stated that Costa Rica may contain as much as 6% of the world's plant and animal species in an area that is the combined size of the U.S. states of Vermont and New Hampshire.

Panama is known as the "Crossroads of the Americas" due to its location between North and South America. The meaning of the country's name, "abundance of fish," reflects Panama's reputation as a paradise for water sports enthusiasts and eco-tourists. Panama's flora and fauna is incredibly diverse, with the most bird species in the world - over 900! Panama's many indigenous tribes are still thriving, enriching its cultural fabric.

Panama enjoys temperatures that are fairly consistent year-round, with daytime temperatures in the 90s °F (30 - 33 °C) and in the nighttime, around 70 °F (21 - 23 °C). There is a prolonged rainy season from May to November and a short dry season from December to April. The most popular time to travel to Panama is December through March, when lack of humidity and nearly zero percent chance of rain make it ideal for travelers.

As one of South America's best-kept secrets, Bolivia boasts such a broad array of attractions that travellers intrepid enough to reach this remote land are treated to a wealth of history, culture, and mind-blowing landscapes. From the wild, dream-like spaces of the Altiplano to the chaotic capital city of La Paz (flanked by not one, but four snow-capped mountain ranges), the Bolivian terrain spans everything from grassy plains to steamy jungles and colonial cities frozen in time, to some of the most remote and inhospitable landscapes on earth.

Cuba, officially the Republic of Cuba, is an archipelago of islands located in the northern Caribbean Sea at the confluence with the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Cuba, the main island, consists mostly of flat to rolling plains apart from the Sierra Maestra mountains in the southeast, whose highest point is Pico Turquino (1,974 m/6,476 ft). The climate in Cuba is tropical and moderated by northeasterly trade winds that blow year-round. In general, there is a drier season from November to April, and a rainier season from May to October.

The average temperature is 70°F in January and 80°F in July. Much of Cuban culture revolves around music and food; Cuban music and dance is the most commonly known expression of culture. The primary musical style is Son, which has been the basis of other musical styles such as salsa, rumba and mambo and an upbeat derivation of the rumba, the cha cha. Cuban cuisine is a fusion of Spanish and Caribbean cuisines.

Ask anyone who has been here and they will tell you that Colombia is an unforgettable holiday destination.
Cartagena de las Indias was founded in 1533 and is one of the most beautiful and fascinating cities in the whole of South America. In the old part of the city – the 'walled city' – Cartagena conserves the beauty of its colonial past in narrow streets flanked by heavy oak doors and pretty flowered balconies. Cartagena is the perfect combination of colonial history and Caribbean joie de vivre; come and visit its beautiful beaches lapped by crystal clear waters on the Rosario Islands, warm and friendly people, and a large variety of excursions and tours to choose from.

Nicaragua is the largest country in Central America with a current population of over 6 million people. Nicaragua declared independence from Spain in 1821 and became an independent republic in 1838. Many of the locals speak English due to British occupation in the 1800s but Spanish is the main language and is spoken by roughly 90% of the population.

The capital Managua's downtown area was nearly demolished by the deadly 1972 earthquake but the country has recovered fairly quickly. Tourism is a rapidly increasing industry in Nicaragua, partially due to the cheap cost of living and travelling. You can find tourists checking out the nightlife in the cities of Leon, Granada, Matagalpa, the surfer's paradise of San Juan del Sur, and the Corn Islands on the Caribbean side of the country.

(i.e. if you are going on a 5 day trip – consider bringing 6 days worth of food.) This will give you a bit of cushion.

Venezuela is more than first meets the eye. Caracas is the gateway to the country and rarely a stopping point on the way to the country's many tourist attractions. Further afield endless natural history and culture travel adventures lie ahead. Still much the same as when Sir Arthur Conan Doyle coined Gran Sabana's "Lost World," Venezuela's geography provides the opportunity to explore territories vast and varied.

Canaima is the getaway to Angel Falls, the highest waterfall in the world at more than 3,000 feet. Venture deep into its base by dugout canoe or fly through the tepuis and see it from the sky. Hike atop the eerie and unique landscapes of Auyantepuy or Mount Roraima Tepuy, one of the top treks in South America.
