São Luis Brazil
São Luis do Maranhão is called “Brazilian Jamaica” and it’s a place where people dance reggae together. It has been declared a Unesco World Heritage Site. It was founded in 1612, by the French, who occupied some of Brazil.
Later, it was also occupied by the Dutch, until the Portuguese colonizers took over. A great number of Brazilian folkloric traditions as well as cultural expressions peculiar to Maranhão are alive and well in São Luis. The most important among them is bumba-meu-boi, a festive pantomime which takes place during June Festivals.
Lençóis Maranhenses Brazil
Composed of large, white, sweeping dunes, the place looks like an archetypal desert, lying just outside the Amazon basin, the region is subject to a regular rain season during the beginning of the year. Located in eastern Maranhão, 3-4 hours from São Luis, it is a vast expanse of sand dunes separating land and sea.
The rains cause a peculiar phenomenon: fresh water sits in the valleys between sand dunes, painting the desert with blue and green lagoons. The sand and the rain become a perfect match.

Day 1: Sao Luis
Arrive in São Luis, reception by your guide at airport and transfer to your hotel. Overnight at a hotel in São Luis, breakfast included.
Overnight Grand Hotel Sao Luis or Hotel Luzeiros (or similar)
Day 2: Sao Luis – Atins
Early morning regular transfer to Barreirinhas (156 miles – paved road) with a stop in Morros for snacks (not included). Arrive in Barreirinhas* and depart by speedboat down the River Preguiça to Atins (around 1 hour).
Along the way you will stop in Vassouras (fishing Village), Caburé (small dunes) and Mandacaru (the oldest fishing village). Lunch will be at Vassouras with free time to relax in hammocks. Around 3:00 pm depart by speedboat to Atins. Private transfer to your hotel. Lunch is included.
Overnight Pousada Cajueiro, breakfast included.
Day 3: Atins – Baixa Grande
After early breakfast, private transfer to the mouth of the Rio Negro (12 miles along the coast). Hike (3 1/2 miles / 3-4 hours) to Baixa Grande, one oasis inside the National Park with 7 resident families.
During the hike (barefoot or with socks), there will be plenty of photo opportunities and swimming in the lagoons. A local lunch and dinner will be served at Baixa Grande. Sunset on a dune with overnight in hammocks at Baixa Grande.

Day 4: Baixa Grande – Queimada
After an early breakfast set off for your second day of trekking. Walk 5 1/2 miles in 4-5 hours to Queimada dos Britos. Queimada is another oasis inside the National Park with 12 resident families. Lunch and dinner will be prepared and served by the locals. Overnight in hammocks at Queimada.

Day 5: Queimada – Santo Amaro
After a very early breakfast (around 3:30am) depart to Betânia. Walk 7 miles in 6-7 hours. Arrive around 10:00 am, visit the Alegre River with lunch (included) at Betânia. After lunch depart by private transfer to Santo Amaro. In the mid-afternoon visit the Gaivota Lagoon.
Swim in the lagoon, watch the sunset, return for dinner (not included). Overnight at a Santo Amaro hotel, breakfast included.
Day 6: Santo Amaro – Sao Luis – Departure
After breakfast, private transfer to Sangue Village (1 hour along sand and paved road). Switch cars for the transfer to São Luis (3 hours along paved road) with a stop for lunch (not included) in Rosário. Continue to the airport for your departing flight.
