Packing Suggestions

A rule of thumb – if you cannot carry all of your luggage by yourself with ease, then you have probably packed too much. It is best to fit everything into a single piece of checked luggage and a carry-on.

Luggage:

  • Hard-sided roller luggage works best as your primary piece of baggage.

  • A large backpack can work but straps can be annoying if you’re not going to use it as a backpack.

  • A carry-on that can fit in an overhead compartment is ideal for essential items (and for short trips to places like Machu Picchu and Amazon jungle lodges).

  • Smaller packing organizers, stuff sacks or plastic ziplock bags help keep your items separated and easy to find.

General packing ideas and checklist for all trips:

Shoes – unless you are on a specialized trekking trip it is best to wear sturdy but comfortable and broken-in shoes that are good for walking.

Cold weather – layer your clothing with a lightweight, quick-dry, moisture-wicking bottom layer, a warm mid-layer, an outer layer (jacket or coat) that is wind/rain-proof.

Formal wear – unless you plan to dine at upscale, fine-dining restaurants, dressy attire should not be necessary. You’re on vacation so dress casually.

General packing suggestions:

  •  Clothing appropriate to your trip
  •  Sunscreen
  •  Personal toiletries and medications
  •  Insect repellent (depending on your destination)
  •  Water bottle
  •  Small flashlight or headlamp
  •  Chargers for your electronic devices
  •  A daypack for camera, extra clothing layers, water and snacks
